The network junction model treats the filled rubber system as a micro-composite and focuses of the behavior of the rubber near the filler network junctions. By considering the boundary condition effects and the rubber/filler interfacial behavior at the bulk as well as the molecular levels, the differences between the simple shear and extensional modes are investigated. The analysis suggests that this carbon black network junction model can provide a plausible explanation for the Payne effect, and resolve scientific controversies.
